Bruce is later seen in the Batcave, with the Joker’s profile on-screen, with “Identity Unknown” displayed, meaning Batman did not know who the Joker was. “Ha” is displayed on the computer screen as Bruce sits in the darkness alone, and a fly lands on the screen. He escaped to Wayne Manor, where he aided Damian Wayne against several assassins.

Phoenix ruled out the joker for his “character study” idea and tried to think of a different one. “I thought, ‘You can’t do the Joker, because, you know, it’s just you can’t do that character, it’s just been done.'” Phoenix’s agent suggested setting up an exploratory meeting with Warner Bros., but he declined and let go of the idea. Similarly, Todd Phillips had been offered to direct comic-based films a number of times, but declined because he thought they were “loud” and did not interest him. According to Phillips, Joker was created from his idea to create a different, more grounded comic book film. He was attracted to the Joker because he did not think there was a definitive portrayal of the character, which he knew would provide considerable creative freedom. During a span of six weeks, Ledger “locked” himself away in a hotel room, forming a character diary and experimenting with voices.

Batman instructs Alfred to enact plan “Fenrir”, a powerful, robotic-armor designed by Batman to do battle with the entire Justice League, flanked by a gas attack that evacuates Gotham City’s citizens from the area. He manages to subdue Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Aquaman, but he is then attacked by Superman and thrown into the Gotham Royal Theater. When Batman asks who has manipulated the League into killing Batman, Superman’s mouth stretches into a wide-grin as he and the subdued league members begin to laugh. In The Killing Joke, the Joker shoots Barbara Gordon (a.k.a. Batgirl), paralyzing her below the waist. He kidnaps Commissioner Gordon and taunts him with photographs of what he has done to Barbara, in an attempt to prove that any man can have “one bad day” and become just like him, but fails to drive Gordon insane, despite giving him some serious trauma.

During the return of new villain Hush to Gotham City, The Riddler hires the Joker to save him, offering the Joker the name of the crooked cop who killed his wife all those years ago. However, the Joker’s attempted revenge is cut short when Hush attacks with Prometheus, forcing the Joker to retreat. After Jason Todd returns to life and takes over his killer’s old Red Hood identity during the lead-up to Infinite Crisis, Jason asserts that the Joker was not quite as crazy as he leads people to believe. Jason attempts to force Batman to shoot the Joker, angered at Batman’s refusal to kill the Joker despite what he’d done.

In 2022, Clayton Davis of Variety ranked Ledger’s portrayal as the Joker the best superhero movie performance in the past 50 years. Ledger’s death affected the marketing campaign for The Dark Knight and also both the production and marketing of Terry Gilliam’s film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus; both Nolan and Gilliam celebrated and paid tribute to Ledger’s work in these films. As the Joker wears a mask through the scene with minimal dialogue, Nolan set the prologue first in the schedule because he wanted to put off performance worries, allowing Ledger to enjoy that relief. His voice frequently shifts in pitch, so that he speaks his dialogue hitting higher notes, followed by an immediate lower voice capable of landing two octaves below.

His life takes a dark, gut-wrenching turn after he lashes back at attackers. Joaquin Phoenix transforms into a new, original take on the Joker adding another great addition to probably the best arch-villain icon. “Joker’s Hildur Guðnadóttir becomes the 1st woman to win an original score Oscar in 22 years”. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as the Joker garnered widespread critical acclaim. Cited as one of the best of his career, it won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, the first of his career after three previous nominations.

During the build-up to Dark Nights Metal, the Snyder/Capullo Joker was captured by Batman and imprisoned within the Batcave. During an investigation into Batman’s activities, Hal Jordan and Duke Thomas discovered and accidently released him, leading to a brief fight between the trio. Additionally, his suit colors were compared with those of his antagonists, including Thomas Wayne, giving them to gray and blue like Batman. Clown makeup was drawn with a classic, antique feel, with darker colors and tones and menacing eyebrows. Due to copyright laws stating that no two clowns can look alike, Ledermann faced a challenge.

Warner Bros. pushed for Phillips to cast Leonardo DiCaprio as the Joker, hoping to use his frequent collaborator Scorsese’s involvement to attract him. Phillips pitched the idea for Joker to Warner Bros. after his film War Dogs premiered in August 2016. Prior to War Dogs, Phillips was mostly known for his comedy films, such as Road Trip , Old School and The Hangover ; War Dogs marked a venture into more unsettling territory. He finally thought that “How do I do something irreverent, but fuck comedy? Oh I know, let’s take the comic book movie universe and turn it on its head with this”. Jack injures Lorna Shore , leading Batman to disfigure his face with a Batarang. Jack escapes and Batman gives Jack’s information to mobsters, who torture Jack in a chemical plant. For the next several appearances, the Joker often escaped capture but suffered an apparent death (falling off a cliff, being caught in a burning building, etc.), from which his body was not recovered. In these first dozen adventures, the Joker killed close to three dozen people, impressive for a villain who didn’t use giant robots, mutant monsters, or space lasers, as was the status quo between 1940 until around 1942. Ironically, the turning point came in “Joker Walks the Last Mile” (Detective Comics #64), when the Joker was actually executed in the electric chair only to be chemically revived by henchmen.

According to the Joker himself, the three most common origin stories are that he was failed comedian who could never make an audience laugh, a mob killer named Napier from outside Gotham City, and of course, the Red Hood story recounted in The Killing Joke. But I understand that the story continues with the joker being rescued by his followers from the psychiatric hospital.. So I’m guessing there’s plenty of room to do a sequel, and hopefully another great Batman vs Joker afterwards, with this kind of look and darkness, such as the trilogy from Christopher Nolan that we loved so much. As a starting actor, Heath Ledger did not attach himself seriously to the roles he was playing.
